Tyre knowledge, tread depth rules, pressures and wheel torque.

Clear, data-grounded guidance on Finnish tyre laws, safe tread limits, EU tyre labels, and 4-tyre replacement costs.

Tread depth rules, winter season dates and EU tyre label

Check the legal minimum limits versus the real aquaplaning safety threshold with a 2 euro coin (the silver rim is 4.0 mm wide).

Tread depth limits (1.6 / 3.0 / 4.0 mm)

  • 1,6 mm: Legal minimum for summer tyres (fine limit). Wet grip is already severely reduced.
  • 3,0 mm: Legal minimum for winter tyres in Finland from November to March.
  • 4,0 mm: Recommended safety threshold for both slush and heavy rain aquaplaning.

Winter & studded tyre season

Winter tyres must be used from 1 November to 31 March whenever weather or road conditions require it. Studded tyres may be used during the same period (1.11.–31.3.) and outside those dates whenever icy or snowy road conditions demand.

EU tyre label & Nordic ice symbol

The EU label rates fuel efficiency (A–E), wet grip (A–E) and external noise (dB). For Finnish winter friction tyres, always verify the Nordic Ice Grip symbol (ISO 19447 mountain peak with ice).
