First Snow Risks and Timely Tyre Swaps
Winter never surprises prepared motorists. Why the +4°C dew point threshold and black ice pose far higher risks than visible powder.
Why bridges freeze first – and why black ice causes twice as many injury collisions as white snow
Over 11 years of official crash statistics show that black ice accounts for 4,253 injury collisions compared to 2,374 on packed snow. White snow gives drivers clear optical feedback to slow down. Black ice looks innocently wet, but provides zero friction when bridging overpasses cool down from both top and underside.
Lokakuinen aamu sillalla: Asfaltti näyttää märältä, mutta pito on nolla
The alarm rings at 6:30. The windscreen has a whisper of frost, but the road surface appears black and innocently wet. You pull out onto the ring road, accelerate onto an overpass bridge—and suddenly the steering wheel turns light as a feather.
4 253 vs. 2 374
Ice causes almost twice as many injury collisions as snow (10.7% vs 6.0% of all accidents). Snow gives visual warning; black ice is invisible.

At zero degrees, tyre friction melts a micro-thin water film on ice acting like ball bearings. Stopping distance from 80 km/h stretches over 120 metres.
-33,3 % autumn casualties
Oct–Nov injuries dropped from 769 to 512 per autumn after 2020 due to vehicle tech, but single-day morning frost spikes are sharper.

Why black ice causes twice as many casualties as snow
“Snow provides direct visual feedback: the white carpet prompts drivers to drop speeds instinctively. Furthermore, winter tyre sipes mechanically interlock with compressed snow crystals. In sharp contrast, black ice is completely transparent. The road looks merely wet, leading drivers into highway bends at full summer speed with zero warning.”
Kettu Rule: When outside temperature falls below +4°C and dew point is close to freezing, bridges, overpasses, and forest curves will ice over even if city streets remain dry.
Why Melting Zero-Degree Ice is Far More Treacherous than -20°C Frost
Severe cold (-20 °C) sounds terrifying, but tyre studs and soft Nordic compounds bite firmly into hard, dry ice. The true hazard is the -2 °C to +1 °C freeze-thaw band. At this temperature, pressure from the rolling tyre generates friction heat that instantly liquifies ice into a micro-thin water film. The tyre glides over a lubricated hydro-layer with friction dropping under 0.08.
