Wheel Torque Standards and Retorquing
Accurate wheel torque (110–130 Nm) for alloy and steel. Why mating faces settle and why retorquing prevents wheel loss.
Driveway wheel changes: Why jumping on a wheel brace shears bolts and warps brake discs
Every autumn weekend across driveways, drivers stand on cross wrenches, trusting their entire 80-kilo bodyweight to ensure bolts are 'tight enough'. In reality, that delivers over 300 Nm of brute force—stretching bolt steel past its elastic limit and warping the brake rotor. Then comes the real mystery: why do bolts still loosen by themselves after 100 kilometres?
110–130 Nm
Typical passenger cars require around 120 Nm. It secures the wheel firmly without crushing soft aluminium bolt tapers.
100–150 km
Microscopic dirt particles between hub and rim crush into dust under vibration. Retorquing restores essential tension.
+50 % tensile stretch overload
Lubricating bolt threads drops friction, transforming 120 Nm into 180 Nm of destructive stretch. Keep threads clean and dry.
The Star Pattern – Why You Never Tighten in a Circle
Tightening sequentially in a circle pulls the wheel crooked against the brake rotor, causing severe steering wobble at 90 km/h.

The most universal European baseline. 120 Nm for alloy wheels is safe and proven.
Why you must NEVER grease wheel bolt threads
“Autonvalmistajien ja pulttistandardien kiristysmomentit on laskettu aina kuiville, puhtaille kierteille. Jos laitat pulttiin kuparitahnaa tai moottoriöljyä, kitkakerroin putoaa puoleen. Momenttiavain naksahtaa vasta kun pultti on venynyt yli sallitun myötörajan. Kierteet voivat revetä navasta tai pultin kanta napsahtaa poikki maantievauhdissa.”
Tip: Brush rust off threads using a brass or steel wire brush. You may apply a microscopic wipe of ceramic paste exclusively to the wheel hub center bore collar to prevent rims seizing to the hub.
